The chart illustrates the proportion of total US population aged 65 and over between the years 1900 and 2000.
Overall, there are three categories which are 65-74, 75-84 and people who aged more than 85. The rate of individuals aged between 75-84 had gradually increased. The percentage of over 85 years also had risen except for in 2000.
In 1900, the rate of 65-74 age group (2.9 %) was almost 3 times greater than 75-84 age group (1 %) while the percentage of over 85 years age group (4.1 %) was slightly more than 4 times.
At the end of the period, the rate of 75-84 aged group had risen more than 4 times and this number was approximately 3 times more than over 85 age group. In addition, the rate of 65-74 had risen to 6.5 % which accounted for the greatest proportion in 2000.
It is clear that the proportion of all 3 given age categories had significantly risen.
