Abstract
Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1996, Vol 41(10), 1026–1027. The author of this text (see record 1995-98003-000) is recognized as one of the first clinical researchers to understand attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as a neurobiological disorder and as an adult disorder. His pioneering research has encompassed issues of etiology, diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of ADHD. In this book, Wender has focused on work demonstrating that in a substantial number of individuals the disabling impairments of ADHD that appear in childhood do in fact continue into adulthood. In the first section of the book, Wender provides excellent descriptions of the cardinal symptoms of ADHD and how they are manifest in adults. They are followed by a comprehensive review of the epidemiology of ADHD and its prevalence in the adult population. Those with clinical interests will find valuable the subsequent presentation of information on diagnostic criteria and assessment tools. Likewise, clinicians will find useful his discussion of the multimodal use of medical, educational, and psychological treatments in assisting patients. The reviewer suggests that this book is a fine resource for anyone with a serious interest in ADHD in adults or in research on the topic. Readers will be informed by the comprehensive exposition of information about this complex but common psychiatric disorder. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
