Joseph Surah 69

Verse (12:69):

Translation (approximate):
“And when they entered upon Joseph, he drew his brother close to him and said, ‘Indeed, I am your brother, so do not grieve over what they used to do.’”

Interpretation within the story’s context:

At this stage in Surah Yusuf, Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) has risen from slavery and imprisonment to become a powerful official in Egypt. His brothers — the same ones who once threw him into a well — arrive seeking food during a famine. Yusuf recognizes them, though they do not recognize him. When his full brother Binyamin (Benjamin) comes, Yusuf reveals his identity privately to him.

Meaning and moral insight:

Compassion over retaliation:

Yusuf has every power to punish or expose his brothers’ wrongdoing.

Yet, his first instinct is compassion — he comforts Binyamin, not plotting revenge.

His words “Do not be saddened by what they used to do” show forgiveness and emotional protection, not anger.

Justice without persecution:

Yusuf will later keep Binyamin with him using a strategic but just plan (placing the cup in his brother’s bag), but this is not an act of cruelty — it’s part of God’s plan to bring truth to light.

His actions are meant to achieve justice and family restoration, not humiliation or harm.

Emotional maturity and divine trust:

Yusuf’s restraint demonstrates a heart purified by years of divine training.

He embodies ihsān (spiritual excellence): doing what is right for God’s sake, not out of ego.

Forgiveness as higher justice:

Later, Yusuf explicitly forgives his brothers and says, “No blame upon you today. May Allah forgive you.” (12:92)

This confirms that from the moment he revealed himself to Binyamin, his intention was always restorative justice, not revenge.

Summary of the verse’s ethical message:

Yusuf seeks reconciliation, not retribution.

His justice is guided by mercy and divine wisdom, not personal hurt.

True justice, in Qur’anic terms, is when the heart is cleansed of vengeance and guided by compassion and truth.
