This verse (Quran 35:27) touches four separate natural phenomena, each of which maps onto a real scientific domain. Here's what's actually going on in each:
Water from the sky
This is simply the water cycle: solar heating drives evaporation from oceans and other bodies of water, water vapor rises and cools, condenses into cloud droplets around aerosol nuclei, and falls as precipitation. This was understood in a basic empirical sense by ancient societies (rain visibly falls, plants visibly grow after rain), even without knowledge of the underlying thermodynamics.
Fruits of various colors
Fruit color comes from a handful of pigment classes, and this is genuinely interesting biochemistry:
- Chlorophylls — green, break down as fruit ripens
- Carotenoids — yellows, oranges, reds (beta-carotene in carrots/mangoes, lycopene in tomatoes/watermelon)
- Anthocyanins — reds, purples, blues; these are flavonoids whose exact color is pH-sensitive (more red in acidic cell sap, more blue/purple as pH rises)
- Betalains — reds and yellows in a smaller group of plants (beets, dragon fruit), which don't co-occur with anthocyanins in the same species
Color diversity across fruit species comes down to which pigment genes are expressed, environmental factors (light, temperature) that trigger pigment synthesis, and the ripening process itself — all downstream of soil water and nutrients, so the verse's causal link ("water → produces fruits of colors") is directionally correct at a coarse level, even though water isn't what determines which color a species produces — genetics does.
Mountains of different colors
This is straightforward geology. Rock color is mostly a function of mineral composition:
- Red/brown rocks — iron oxide minerals (hematite, limonite); this is literally rust at geological scale
- White rocks/peaks — quartz, calcite, marble, or gypsum-rich formations; alternatively, snow and ice cover at high altitude
- Black/dark gray — basalt, obsidian, or high concentrations of dark minerals like magnetite
- Other colors — sulfur deposits (yellow), copper minerals (green/blue), etc.
So "white, or red, or some other color" is an accurate general description of how mountain ranges actually look when you compare different ones — it reflects real mineralogical variation, not a claim you'd need advanced chemistry to state descriptively.
Ravens are black
Corvid (crow/raven family) plumage owes its black color primarily to eumelanin, the same pigment responsible for black/brown coloration in mammalian hair and skin. Raven feathers also show a notable secondary effect: structural coloration — the feather's microstructure scatters light in a way that produces an iridescent blue-green-purple sheen on top of the black, from constructive interference in the keratin layers, not from additional pigment.
A note on interpretation: all four observations are accurate descriptions of visible natural phenomena that any careful observer, ancient or modern, could state without knowing the underlying mechanisms.
