The Lying and Erring Forehead
One of the most remarkable verses of the Quran is Verse 16 of Surah Al-Alaq, which describes the forehead as lying and erring.
Why, then, are the traits of "making errors" and "telling lies" associated with the forehead region?

The human brain (encephalon) consists of structures known as the cerebral hemispheres, the brainstem, and the cerebellum. According to another classification, it is divided into three parts: the rhombencephalon, the mesencephalon, and the prosencephalon. In this classification, the cerebellum and the portion of the brainstem excluding the mesencephalon are designated as the rhombencephalon; the telencephalon (formed by the cerebral hemispheres) and the diencephalon (located deep to them) are designated as the prosencephalon. The cerebral hemispheres are divided into various lobes by numerous grooves (sulci). These are four in number:
Frontal Lobe (Anterior)
Parietal Lobe (Superior)
Temporal Lobe (Lateral)
Occipital Lobe (Posterior)
The region where impulses controlling muscle movement in the body are generated is located in the frontal lobe and is known as the "primary motor area." The "secondary motor area," responsible for planning movements, is also located in the frontal lobe. Additionally, the "motor speech center"—also known as Broca's area, which is responsible for the act of speech—and the "prefrontal cortex"—which contains centers related to personality and behavior—are among the structures that make up the frontal lobe. The prefrontal cortex "determines an individual's responsiveness to events; it also influences decision-making and personality. (1)"
The prefrontal cortex holds special significance from a psychiatric perspective (2). This region is where information from all sources is organized and integrated, and where decisions regarding the behavior to be exhibited are made (3).
By utilizing the prefrontal area, we can shape our thoughts and make plans for the future (4).
In a study published in the journal Neuroreport in 2001, Spence et al. (5) used a type of MRI scanner—fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging)—to detect a significant increase in activity within the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex during the act of lying. Based on this, they suggested that the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex might be responsible for concealing the truth or fabricating lies. This finding was supported by two separate studies conducted by Lee et al. (6) and Ganis et al. (7), which were published in the respected scientific journals Human Brain Mapping (2002) and Cerebral Cortex (2003).
The prefrontal cortex is so closely linked to the act of lying that structural differences in this region result in "pathological lying." In a highly influential study published in the world-renowned British Journal of Psychiatry in 2005 (8), the amount of prefrontal white matter was found to be higher in pathological liars. A second study conducted by the same team and published in 2007 demonstrated that this increase in white matter volume was specific to certain regions of the prefrontal area (9).
